An update on Lafora and PRA in UK Mini Wires

Following the recent worrying trend whereby vets are seeing Miniature Wire Dachshunds presenting with PRA, the figures in the most recent quarter of the Breed Record Supplement were collated to investigate any unsafe litters.

There were 36 litters producing 141 puppies.

As far as Lafora is concerned, there were two unsafe litters with neither parent being tested and producing four puppies. The long-term Lafora trend is shown in the chart below.

For cord 1 PRA, again two litters with neither parent being tested and again producing four puppies. These are different litters, therefore eight litters carrying potential diseases.

Noticeably the parentage was mainly from abroad and exclusively from unknown lines.

The only way to move forward is to continue to educate the buying public to make sure any potential puppy is from a safe mating.
