Choosing a DNA testing service? Support canine health research with CAGT
At Dachshund Health UK, we encourage Dachshund breeders to consider Canine Genetic Testing (CAGT) when choosing a DNA testing service. Using CAGT means your testing also supports research into inherited diseases in dogs. The scientists at CAGT are key contributors to the IVDD research projects we are supporting at Cambridge University Vet School.
Following the Royal Kennel Club’s announcement that its DNA testing service is to close, breeders may be looking for an alternative. CAGT offers a service whose results are recognised by the Royal Kennel Club, and can submit results on your behalf.
DNA testing that gives back to research
All profits from CAGT’s genetic testing service are reinvested in the Canine Genetics Centre’s research into inherited diseases in dogs. By choosing CAGT, you are helping to sustain the scientific work that supports better canine health.
The Canine Genetics Centre has received no core funding since April 2024. Keeping the centre operational, fully resourced and ready to investigate inherited diseases in any breed costs between £350,000 and £400,000 a year. Grants, donations and income from CAGT help fund this work. Your choice of testing service can therefore make a difference beyond the individual test result.
Make CAGT part of your health-testing plans
If you are planning DNA testing for your Dachshunds, visit CAGT’s website to check the tests available and find out how to order. Check that the test you choose is appropriate for your Dachshund’s variety and your breeding plans.
DNA testing is one part of responsible breeding: use results alongside other relevant health screening, family history and breed-specific guidance when making breeding decisions.
Choose a testing service that supports research as well as providing results. Please consider CAGT for your next DNA test.
