Research samples needed for Dachshund IVDD study

Cambridge Vet School is calling for Dachshund owners to contribute samples to an ongoing research project investigating the genetic basis of intervertebral disc disease (IVDD) in Dachshunds.
The project is run by an interdisciplinary team of veterinary neurologists and geneticists at Cambridge Vet School. The team is very grateful to all owners who have already taken part; their support has helped the study make substantial progress, and analyses arising from this work are now underway.
As the research has progressed, additional dogs are needed to further strengthen the study. The current priority is to enrol healthy control dogs, which are essential for improving the power of genetic analyses and helping to identify genetic variants associated with susceptibility or resistance to IVDD.
Cambridge Vet School is particularly seeking Dachshunds aged 10 years or older that have never shown clinical signs consistent with IVDD, including:
· back pain;
· hind limb weakness; or
· inability to walk due to spinal disease.
Miniature Smooth-Haired Dachshunds are especially valuable for the study, but samples from all Dachshund varieties that meet these criteria are welcome.
Dogs with a history of IVDD are also still being recruited, particularly where the diagnosis has been confirmed by a veterinary surgeon or veterinary neurologist. However, the greatest current need is for healthy control dogs.

Sample collection is pain-free and involves gently swabbing the inside of the dog’s mouth.
By comparing DNA from affected and unaffected Dachshunds, the project aims to improve understanding of the genetic basis of IVDD and ultimately support strategies that reduce the prevalence of this disease within the breed.
